I visited Uganda and, together with local children, gathered wild grasses and flowers growing there and used them to make pound-prints on cloth bought at the market. Around thirty children aged between two and fourteen took part. The plants used for dyeing were chosen and picked by the children themselves, and each child printed in their own way: some pounded, some rubbed, some crushed. Watching and copying one another, they devised their own methods. At times they competed over the plants, argued, and chatted.

As time passed, different children drifted in and out—very young children, children arriving after school, and children joining only briefly between helping to fetch water—so the people who made up the gathering varied in character, gender, and age. Because of the language barrier, it remains unclear what they were talking about or what relationships they had with one another; yet through a shared action, children of many different dispositions and ages threw themselves into the same time, and a place came into being.​
